harvard oh harvard

i got a lovely surprise today when Kristin gave me this book after i came back from lessons.
the prayer of Jabez! oh my gosh. and the first thing i thought about was our ronald macdonald tribe tee hahaha.

she wrote me a letter too. and blessed me with Proverbs 8:17

I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.

divine.

moving on to HARVARD!
i intend to do an extension module at Harvard every tuesday from 5.30-7.30pm.

i almost didn't go today because geri and sam backed out suddenly and alicia was already on her way there. so i was battling between taking the train ALONE or just skipping this whole harvard thing.

in the end, i decided that i had to learn how to be brave. and i took the train alone.
so scary!!
i am still very confused whether its the inbound or the outbound train.
then i had to alight at park street, climb some stairs and get to the red line.
but i made it. :) yayy.

the course that i want to take is called Developmental Psychopathology.
sounds chiminology right??

but the first lecture was so interesting... check out what we will be doing for the whole semester.

  1. Classification of Childhood Disorders: Principles and Models
  2. Risk and Resilience in Normal Development
  3. Attachment, Disorders of Infancy
  4. Developmental Disabilities and Disorders: Mental Retardation and Learning Disorders
  5. Pervasive Developmental Disorders: Autism and Asperger's Disorder
  6. Severe Pathology: Schizophrenia and other severe disorders
  7. Anxiety Disorders I: Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Separation Anxiety Disorder
  8. Anxiety Disorders II: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Panic Disorder
  9. Mood Disorders: Depression and Bipolar Disorder
  10. Externalizing Disorders: Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder
  11. Externalizing Disorders II: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  12. Child Abuse and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  13. Eating and Elimination Disorders

Interesting right?!

did you know that certain kids with down syndrome can have an IQ of 85 when surrounded by good family support and that these kids can even go to college?

did you know that many adults have ADHD but its not obvious because they can left alone to do what they want in their jobs and are given the space to translate their hyperactivity into something else; this means that ADHD is not just a child disorder, but we see it more often in kids because the worst thing for a kid with ADHD is to go to school. Haha!

did you know that while parent-dectomy (taking the kid out of a problematic family) was greatly advocated in the past, it is no longer considered so because most children are attached to their parents and they do better in life with their parents involved, even if the parents are mentally challenged?

and i am very excited about the books we will be reading.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (everyone has read this right?)
The Center will Not Hold. My descent into madness (this is about a lawyer who has schizophrenia)
The Glass Castle (this is about a girl who grows up in a family where her mother has bipolar disorder and her father is an alcoholic)

basically i am very interested in many of the highlighted topics because i think that teachers must be aware of all these disorders, especially since it's increasing rapidly in our societies. when we know what the disorder is about, we will then be able to deal with the students and then help them to reach their full potential. i am certainly for autistic children (except those with severe autism) to be in the mainstream schools because they need to learn how to be in a normal environment.

so MOE should stop making us take modules that are NOT relevant!! like linguistics....

and if i do well in both history and psychology... they should think about increasing my scholarship allowance. hahahahaha. KIDDING!

so do you all think its worth it? i need to register soon.
some wise friends already tell me to go ahead but i am still a little apprehensive!

the bad news for today:

i think there is something wrong with my middle finger, left hand.
for the past two days i haven't been able to feel it! and i try to squeeze it really hard but all i get is the pins and needles tingling feeling.
shucks, is my finger going to drop off? :(
